True Humility Does Not Resist God’s Decrees

There are also some who flee only because of their humility, so as not to be set above others to whom they think themselves unequal. And their humility, if it is surrounded by other virtues, is true humility in the eyes of God when it is not stubborn in refusing what it is commanded to take up to good purpose. For he is not truly humble who understands that the good pleasure of the will above ought to prevail, and yet scorns its rule. Rather, submitting himself to God’s arrangements and turning away from the vice of obstinacy, if he has already been granted beforehand gifts by which he may benefit others too, he ought, when he is commanded to take up the highest rule, to flee from it in his heart, and yet obey against his will.
