Letters, Book 11
To Vitus, Appointing Him Defensor of the Church
Gregory to Vitus, and so on.
If you are bound by no condition or obligation to bodily service, and have not been a cleric of any other city, and if there is no canonical objection to you, it is our will and pleasure, for the good of the church, that you take the office of defensor of the church. You are to carry out without corruption and with diligence whatever we instruct you to do for the benefit of the poor. Use this privilege, which we have conferred on you after deliberation, so that you faithfully do your best to accomplish all that we instruct you, as one who must give an account of his doings at the judgment of our God. We have dictated this letter, to be put in writing, to Paterius, the secundicerius of the notaries of our church, and have signed it.
