To Anthemius, Subdeacon of Campania, on Sending Amandus to Rome
Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon of Campania. The man who had been elected bishop of the city of Sorrento seemed to us unfit, and since then they have elected Amandus, presbyter of the oratory of Saint Severinus in the Lucullan fort. So we instruct your experience, setting excuses aside, to take care to send this presbyter to us with all speed, so that, if nothing prevents his coming, the wishes of those who have asked for him may be fulfilled with the help of Christ. As for his life and conduct, since they can be better known where he has long lived, make it your concern, together with our brother and fellow bishop Fortunatus, to look into them carefully. And if nothing stands in the way of his promotion to the sacred order, he should be sent to us without any delay. But so that our glorious daughter Clementina may not take this badly, let your experience go to her and do this with her consent. If, however, she should be inclined to resist, let your experience still send him here without delay, since we ought to soothe the feelings of our children in such a way as still not to block the good of souls.
