To Clementina the Patrician, on Amandus Chosen Bishop of Sorrento

Gregory to Clementina, and so on. Know, glorious daughter, that the presbyter Amandus has been elected bishop by the people of Sorrento. We have written for him to be sent here, but you ought not to be saddened by his absence, since one who is with you in heart should not even be thought of as leaving you. And since the man who once pleased you is acceptable to those who want a bishop, bless Almighty God for this and rejoice all the more with Christian devotion. Gladly do your best to speed his coming to us for the good of others, since it belongs to sincere love to rejoice when someone we love is called so that he may grow.
