Letters, Book 8
To Marinianus, Bishop of Ravenna, on a Woman Who Took Refuge in a Church
Gregory to Marinianus, and so on. John, the bearer of this letter, complains that his wife, fleeing from the harassment of a certain George, has long been staying within holy precincts and has so far received no help. Since she says there is a dispute about her status, and has asked that the matter be commended to your fraternity, we hereby urge you to give this woman your protection and not to allow her to be wronged in any way by anyone without reason. But if the question about her status still continues, see to it that it is brought to judgment without any oppression and in a lawful way. Then, when the truth has been established and what accords with the law has been decided, neither party will be able to complain of having been wronged. The month of May, in the first indiction.
