To John, Bishop of Syracuse, Granting the Pallium
Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse. Moved by the kindness of the Apostolic See and by the order of ancient custom, we have thought fit to grant your fraternity the use of the pallium, since you are known to have received the office of government in the church of Syracuse. You may use it at the times and in the manner in which you know without doubt that your predecessor used it. Even so, we remind you: as you rejoice at having received from us the use of this ornament, to the honor of your priestly office, so you must also strive, by uprightness of manners and of deeds, to adorn the office you have received, to our glory in Christ. For in this way you will be conspicuous for two ornaments that answer to each other, if the excellence of your mind also agrees with this garment for the body.
For we confirm by our authority all the privileges known to have been granted to your church in the past, and we decree that they shall remain unbroken.
