To the Clergy and People of Ravenna, on Marinianus’s Faith
Gregory to the clergy and people of the church of Ravenna. We have been told that certain men, stirred up by the malignant spirit, have tried to corrupt your minds with false talk about the reputation of our brother and fellow bishop Marinianus. They say that this brother of ours honors the holy Synod of Chalcedon less than he ought. On this point he himself, in person, will satisfy you all of the soundness of his faith. And we fully testify that, nursed from his cradle in the bosom of the holy universal church, he has held to the right preaching of the faith, and his life bears witness to it. For he honors the holy Synod of Nicaea, in which Arius was condemned; the Synod of Constantinople, in which Macedonius was condemned; the first Synod of Ephesus, in which Nestorius was condemned; and the holy Synod of Chalcedon, in which Dioscorus and Eutyches were condemned. And if anyone ever presumes to say anything against the faith of these four synods, and against the Tome and definition of Pope Leo of holy memory, let him be anathema. So, now that you have received the fullest satisfaction, love your pastor with complete love from a pure heart, so that the intercession of this same pastor of yours, poured out purely before God, may work for your good.
