Letters, Book 5
To Vincomalus, Appointing Him Defensor of the Church
Gregory to Vincomalus, and so on.
For the good of the church it is our will and pleasure that, if you are bound by no condition of servitude or obligation to bodily service, and have not been a cleric of any other city, and if there is no canonical objection to you, you take the office of defensor of the church. You are to carry out without corruption and with eagerness whatever we instruct you to do for the benefit of the poor, using this privilege which we have conferred on you after deliberation, so that you faithfully do your best to accomplish all that we may instruct you, as one who must give an account of his doings at the judgment of our God. We have dictated this letter, to be put in writing, to Paterius, notary of our church. In the month of March, in the thirteenth indiction.
