To John, Bishop of Gallipoli, on Bishop Andrew

Gregory to John, bishop of Gallipoli.

From the reports your fraternity has sent us, it appears that Andrew, our brother and fellow bishop, certainly had a concubine. But since it is uncertain whether he has touched her while placed in sacred orders, you must warn him with earnest urging: if he knows that he had intercourse with her while in sacred orders, he should withdraw from the office he holds and minister no longer. And if, knowing he has done this thing, he hides his sin and presumes to minister, let him know that his soul stands in peril at the judgment of God. As for the woman on the church’s roll whom he had beaten with clubs: although we do not believe that she died eight months afterward, yet since he had her punished in this way, in a manner unfitting to his sacred calling, you are to suspend him from celebrating mass for two months, so that at least this disgrace may teach him how to behave in the future.

Moreover, the clergy of this same bishop claim, in a petition presented to us and attached below, that they suffer much ill-treatment from him. So let your fraternity take care to find out all these things accurately, and to correct and settle them reasonably, so that they will have no need hereafter to come here over this matter. In the month of July, in the eleventh indiction.
