To Castorius, Bishop of Rimini, on Timothea’s Oratory

Gregory to Castorius, and so on.

The illustrious lady Timothea has informed us in a written petition, as set out below, that she has founded an oratory on property of hers within the city of Rimini, and she wants it consecrated in honor of the holy cross. Accordingly, dearest brother, if this building is within the jurisdiction of your city, and if it is known that no body has been buried there, you are to consecrate the oratory solemnly, but without any public mass. First, however, you must receive a lawful endowment: two-thirds of all her property, apart from the slaves, that is, of her movable goods, her fixed property and her livestock, with the use and income of it kept for her as long as she lives. This endowment is to be secured by deeds in the city records. The consecration is on condition that no baptistery is ever built in that place in the future, and that you do not appoint a cardinal presbyter there. And if she should want masses said there, let her know that she must ask your love for a presbyter, so that no other priest whatever may presume to do anything else there. You will also reverently lay in place the holy things she has provided.
