Letters, Book 1
To Martinus, Bishop in Corsica, on His Appointment to Saona
Gregory to Martinus, and so on.
It is right for us to lend a kind ear to those who ask for what is just, so that the petitioners may find the remedies they hope for, and the church may not lack a shepherd’s anxious care. Your fraternity formerly held the honor of the priesthood in the church of Tanates, but for its sins that church has been so seized and ruined by the savagery of enemies that no hope remains of your returning there. So by the authority of this letter we appoint you, beyond dispute, cardinal priest in the church of Saona, which has now long been without the help of a pontiff. Arrange and order everything, then, according to the commands of the canons, with watchful care in the love of God, so that your fraternity may rejoice at having gained what you desired, and the church of God may be filled with answering joy at having received you as its cardinal pontiff.
