Letters, Book 1
To Peter the Subdeacon, on Relief for Pastor
Gregory to Peter, and so on.
If we meet our neighbors’ needs with a kindly spirit and show them compassion, we will surely find the Lord mercifully inclined to our own petitions. Now we have learned that a man named Pastor, whose sight is very weak, who has a wife and two slaves, who had also formerly been with the glorious lady Jonatha, is suffering great need. So by this written order we instruct your experience to give him without delay, for his support, about seventy-five bushels of wheat and the same amount of beans, which may afterward be entered in your accounts. Act, then, so as both to gain for yourself the reward of good service and to carry out our orders. In the month of August.
