From Anatolius of Constantinople to Leo, on the Definition of the Faith

He Describes How the Synod Framed Its Teaching on the Incarnation

But after passing judgment on him, we had to come to agreement, with prayers and tears, on a definition of the right faith, for that was the chief reason the emperor summoned the holy synod. Your holiness was present with us there in spirit, and worked with us through the God-fearing men you sent. So, under the protection of the most holy and beautiful martyr Euphemia, we all gave ourselves to this important matter with all deliberation. The occasion demanded that all the holy bishops assembled should publish a unanimous decision, for clarity and for an explicit statement of the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. And the Lord God, who is found and revealed even to those who do not seek him, yes, even to those who do not ask for him, showed us his truth, though some tried at first to resist. He ordained that it should be written down and proclaimed by all, unanimously and without dispute. This confirmed the souls of the strong, and invited into the way of truth all who were turning aside from it. After we had all signed this document unanimously, we who had assembled in this ecumenical synod, in the name of the faith of the same most holy and triumphant martyr Euphemia, and of our most religious and Christ-loving emperor Marcian, and of our most religious daughter, in all things most faithful, the empress Pulcheria Augusta, laid on the holy altar, with prayer and joy and happiness, the definition written in accordance with your holy letter to confirm the faith of our fathers. Then we presented it to their pious care, for that was how they had asked to receive it. And when they had received it, they glorified with us their Master Christ, who had driven away all the mist of heresy and had graciously made clear the word of truth. In this way, by the Savior’s mercy, the peace of the church and the agreement of the priests about the pure faith were established together.
