Festal Letters
From the Fortieth Festal Letter, for Easter 368
“You are the ones who have stayed with me in my trials. And I appoint a kingdom for you, as my Father has appointed one for me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom.” Since we are called, then, to the great and heavenly supper, in that upper room which has been swept clean, let us “cleanse ourselves,” as the apostle urged, “from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” Then, being spotless within and without (without, by clothing ourselves with self-restraint and justice; within, by the Spirit, rightly handling the word of truth), we may hear, “Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
