The Same Text Explained Further

For his only Son, you Arians, might indeed be called “Father” by his Father, yet not in the sense you in your error might perhaps take it. Rather, while he is Son of the Father who begot him, he might be called “Father of the coming age.” For we must not leave any of your guesses open to you. Well, then, he says through the prophet, “A Son is born and given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder, and his name will be called Angel of Great Counsel, Mighty God, Ruler, Father of the coming age.” The only Son of God, then, is at once Father of the coming age, and Mighty God, and Ruler. And it is clearly shown that all things that the Father has are his, and that as the Father gives life, so the Son likewise is able to give life to whom he will. For “the dead,” he says, “will hear the voice of the Son, and will live.” And the will and desire of Father and Son are one, since their nature also is one and indivisible.

The Arians torment themselves for nothing, because they do not understand our Savior’s saying, “All things that the Father has are mine.” For by this passage the delusion of Sabellius can be overturned at once, and it will expose the folly of our modern Jews. This is why the only Son, who has life in himself as the Father has, also alone knows who the Father is: because he is in the Father and the Father in him. For he is his Image, and so, because he is his Image, all that belongs to the Father is in him. He is an exact seal, showing the Father in himself: the living and true Word, Power, Wisdom, our Sanctification and Redemption. For “in him we live and move and have our being,” and “no one knows who the Father is except the Son, or who the Son is except the Father.”
