Martha’s Confession

But perhaps it bothers you that all this time I have been using mainly the witness of the apostle Paul alone. He is good enough for me, the man God chose; and I do not blush to call as witness to my faith the man God willed to be the teacher of the whole world. But to give way to your wishes, since perhaps you imagine I have no other proofs to use, hear the perfect mystery of human salvation and eternal happiness that Martha proclaims in the gospel. What does she say? “Truly, Lord, I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God, who has come into this world.” Learn the true faith from a woman. Learn the confession of eternal hope. And yet you have a splendid consolation: you need not blush to be taught the mystery of salvation by one whose testimony God did not refuse to accept.
