Your Reasoning Part Is Wounded
So if you want to find the source and origin of this fault, you must recognize that the reasoning part of your mind and soul is corrupted: the part, that is, from which the faults of presumption and empty glory mostly spring. This first member, so to speak, of your soul must be healed by the judgment of right discernment and the virtue of humility. For when it is injured, and you imagine that you can not only still climb the heights of perfection but actually teach others, and you consider yourselves able and fit to instruct others, the pride of empty glory carries you away into these empty wanderings, which your own confession has brought to light. You will be able to get rid of them without difficulty if you are established, as I said, in the humility of true discernment. Learn with sorrow of heart how hard and difficult a thing it is for each of us to save his own soul, and admit from the depths of your heart that you are not only far removed from that pride of teaching, but that you actually still need the help of a teacher yourselves.
