Would This Give the Weak an Excuse to Lie?
As far as the force of your words goes, weighed as they have been with reason and care, our scruple about our promise would easily have been taken from us, were it not that we were terribly afraid that this example might offer certain weaker brothers an opening for lying, if they knew that the good faith of an agreement could in any way be lawfully broken. Yet this very thing is forbidden in such forceful and threatening terms by the prophet when he says, “You will destroy all those who speak a lie,” and, “The mouth that speaks a lie kills the soul.”
