The Conferences, Conference 7
The Answer Put Off to Another Night
Your questions would rob us of our whole night’s rest, so that we would not notice the approach of dawn and would be tempted greedily to prolong our conference until sunrise. Yet if we began to trace out the answer to the question you have raised, it would launch us on a wide and deep sea of questions, which the shortness of the time we have would not let us cross. So I think it will be better to keep it for another night. Then, through the raising of this question, I will receive from your very ready conversation some spiritual joy and richer fruit, and, if the Holy Spirit grants us a favorable breeze, we will be able to go more freely into the intricacies of the questions raised. So let us enjoy a little sleep, and shake off the drowsiness that steals over our eyes as dawn approaches. Then we will go to church together, for the keeping of Sunday bids us do so. After the service we will come back and, as you wish, discuss with double delight whatever the Lord may have given us for our common improvement.
