A Question on the Soul’s Union with Demons

Please tell us: what is that indistinct and shared union of the soul with those evil spirits, by which they can be (I will not say joined to it, but) united with it in such a way that they can talk with it unnoticed, find their way into it, suggest to it whatever they want, urge it to whatever they like, and look into and see its thoughts and movements? The result is so close a union between them and the soul that, without God’s grace, it is almost impossible to tell what comes from their urging and what from our own free will.
