The Lukewarmness of Eunuchs
This is why, finally, we often find this lukewarmness of mind in eunuchs. Because they are, so to speak, free from the needs of the flesh, they imagine they have no need either of the trouble of bodily abstinence or of a broken heart. Made slack by this freedom from anxiety, they make no effort truly to seek or to gain perfection of heart, or even purity from spiritual faults. And this condition, which results from their state in the flesh, becomes natural to them, which is a far worse state. For the one who passes from coldness to lukewarmness is branded by the Lord’s words as still more hateful.
