God Directs Our Way
And truly the saints never said that it was by their own efforts that they gained direction for the way in which they walked as they advanced toward the perfection of virtue. Rather, they prayed to the Lord for it, saying, “Direct me in your truth,” and, “Direct my way in your sight.” Another declares that he discovered this very thing not only by faith but also by experience, and as it were from the very nature of things: “I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not his own; nor is it in a man to walk and to direct his steps.” And the Lord himself says to Israel: “I will direct him like a green fir tree; from me your fruit is found.”
