The Institutes, Book 12
Two Kinds of Pride
There are two kinds of this pride. One is the kind we said troubles the best and most spiritual men; the other attacks even beginners and those still living by the flesh. Each kind is stirred up by a dangerous self-exaltation toward both God and man, but the first kind has to do more particularly with God, and the second especially with men. With God’s help we will treat the origin of this second kind and its remedies, as far as we can, in the latter part of this book. For now we propose to say a few things about the first kind, by which, as I said before, the perfect are especially tried.
