Acedia Puts the Soul to Sleep

All the troubles of this disease are admirably expressed by David in a single verse, where he says, “My soul slept from weariness,” that is, from acedia. He is quite right to say that it was not his body but his soul that slept. For in truth the soul that is wounded by the arrow of this passion does sleep, as far as all contemplation of the virtues and all insight of the spiritual senses are concerned.
