The Institutes, Book 7
How Greed Blocks Every Virtue
With such strides downward, then, he goes from bad to worse. At last he does not care to keep, I will not say the virtue, but even the shadow of humility, love and obedience. He is displeased with everything, and murmurs and groans over every task. Now, having thrown off all reverence, he dashes off headlong and unbridled like a bad-tempered horse. Discontented with his daily food and his usual clothing, he announces that he will not put up with it any longer. He declares that God is not there only, and that his salvation is not tied to that place; and he laments bitterly that if he does not take himself off from it quickly, he will soon die.
