Abbots Paesius and John

The aged John, who was head of a large monastery and of a great number of brothers, came to visit the aged Paesius, who was living in a vast desert. As one asks a very old friend, he asked him what he had done in all the forty years since they had parted, during which the brothers had hardly ever disturbed him in his solitude. “The sun has never seen me eating,” said Paesius. “Nor me angry,” said the other.
