The Life of Saint Martin
Martin Raises a Man Who Had Hanged Himself
Not long after these events, as Martin was passing the estate of a certain man named Lupicinus, who was highly regarded by the world’s standards, he was met by shouting and the lamentations of a wailing crowd. Anxious, he went up to the crowd and asked what all this weeping meant, and he was told that one of the household slaves had taken his own life by hanging. Hearing this, Martin went into the room where the body lay, shut out the whole crowd, stretched himself on the body, and spent a little while in prayer. Soon the dead man, his face shining with life and his drooping eyes fixed on Martin’s face, was roused. With a gentle effort he tried to rise, took hold of the holy man’s right hand, and by its help stood on his feet. And so, while the whole crowd looked on, he walked with Martin to the porch of the house.
