To Alexander of Hierapolis, Standing by His Pledges
I think that the most holy and venerable bishop, my lord John, must have been more pleased than anyone that I refused either to consent to the condemnation of the most holy and venerable bishop Nestorius or to break the pledges made at Tarsus, Chalcedon and Ephesus. He remembers too what was often received from us at Antioch after our departure. So let no one deceive your holiness into believing that I would ever do this, for God is without doubt on my side and strengthening me.
