To Andrew, Bishop of Samosata, on Cyril’s New Letter

The illustrious Aristolaus has sent Magisterianus from Egypt with a letter of Cyril, in which he anathematizes Arius, Eunomius, Apollinarius, and all who assert that the Godhead of Christ can suffer and who hold the confusion and mixing of the two natures. At this we rejoice, although he did withhold his agreement from our statement. He further requires us to sign the condemnation that has been passed, and to anathematize the doctrine of the holy bishop Nestorius. Your holiness knows well that if anyone anathematizes the doctrine of that most holy and venerable bishop without making distinctions, it is just the same as if he were seen to anathematize true religion. If we are compelled, then, we must anathematize those who call Christ a mere man, or who divide our one Lord Jesus Christ into two sons and deny his divinity, and so on.
