First Letter of the Eastern Commissioners from Chalcedon

We have arrived at Chalcedon, since neither we nor our opponents were allowed to enter Constantinople because of the riots of the excellent monks. On our arrival we heard that eight days before we appeared, the lord Nestorius had been dismissed from Ephesus, free to go wherever he wished. Behold the glory of our most pious sovereign! This distresses us greatly, since deeds done unlawfully and irregularly now really seem to carry some weight. But let your holiness be assured that we will eagerly join battle for the faith, and that we are willing to fight even to the death. Today, the eleventh day of the month Gorpiaeus, we are expecting our most pious emperor to cross over to the Rufinianum and hear the case there. So we beg your holiness to pray to the Lord Christ to help us, so that we may be able to confirm the faith of the holy Fathers and pull up by the roots these Chapters, which have sprouted to the harm of the church. We implore your holiness to think and act with us, and to remain steadfast in your ready devotion to the orthodox faith. When this letter was written, the lord Himerius had not yet joined us; perhaps he was held up on the road. But do not let this trouble you. Only let your piety stand firmly by us, and we trust that the gloom will lift and the truth will shine out.
