Letters
To Anatolius the Patrician, on the Letters of Leo
The Lord who watches over and governs all things has shown both that my doctrines are the apostolic truth and that the slander laid at my door is false. For the writings sent by the most godly and holy lord Leo, archbishop of Great Rome, to Flavian of holy memory and to the rest gathered at Ephesus, agree entirely with what I myself have written and have always preached in church. So as soon as I had read them, I praised the loving-kindness of the Lord, because he had not wholly abandoned the churches but had kept safe the spark of orthodoxy. Or should I not rather say, not a spark, but a very great torch, fit to set the world alight and give it light? For he has truly kept the apostolic stamp in his writings. In them we have found, all together, what was handed down by the holy and blessed prophets and apostles, and by their successors in the preaching of the gospel, and also by the holy fathers gathered at Nicaea. By these, I declare, I stand, and I charge all who hold other doctrines with impiety. Side by side with these writings of mine I have set one of the letters he sent to Ephesus, so that when your excellency reads them you may remember the words I have often spoken in church, may recognize that the doctrines agree, and may hate those who speak the lie, as well as those who have set up their new heresy against the doctrines of the apostle.
