Honorius and Telemachus the Monk

Honorius, who inherited the empire of Europe, put a stop to the gladiator fights that had long been held at Rome. This is how he came to do it. A man named Telemachus had taken up the ascetic life. He had set out from the East and had come to Rome for this very reason. There, while the hateful spectacle was being shown, he went into the stadium himself, stepped down into the arena, and tried to stop the men who were turning their weapons on one another. The spectators of the slaughter were furious. Driven by the mad fury of the demon who delights in such bloody deeds, they stoned the peacemaker to death. When the admirable emperor was told of this, he counted Telemachus among the victorious martyrs and put an end to that ungodly spectacle.
