Maximus Warns Valentinian

After a considerable time Maximus was told of the attacks being made on the loud-voiced herald of the truth. He sent letters to Valentinian, charging him to put a stop to his war against true religion and urging him not to abandon his father’s faith. If his advice was ignored, he threatened war besides, and he backed up what he wrote with what he did. He gathered his forces and marched on Milan, where Valentinian was then living. When Valentinian heard that he was coming, he fled into Illyricum. He had learned by experience what good he had gained by following his mother’s advice.
