Manuscripts and Editions of His Works

The editions of the Church History are the most numerous, though several of the other works have also been printed many times. Of the editions of the collected works, these are the principal ones.

First, the first printed edition, by Paulus Manutius, in the Latin translation only: Rome, 1556. Second, that of J. Birckman, in two folio volumes, in Latin only: Cologne, 1573. Third, that of J. Sirmond, in four folio volumes, in Greek and Latin: Paris, 1642. To this was added, in 1684, the Auctarium, or supplement, of J. Garnier, with his dissertations. Fourth, that of John Lewis Schulze, in Greek and Latin, based on the one before it, in five volumes: Halle, 1774. Fifth, Migne’s edition of the one just named: Paris, 1860. This last is the edition used for the translation in this work.

The manuscript support for the works of Theodoret is strong. The editions named above are based on manuscripts in the libraries of Augsburg, Florence, Rome and Naples.

To the works on Theodoret mentioned in the notes, the following may be added: S. Küpper, Ausgewählte Schriften des seligen Theodoret aus dem Urtext übersetzt. E. Binder, Études sur Théodoret: Geneva, 1844. Specht, Theodor von Mopsuestia und Theodoret von Cyrus: Munich, 1871.
