The Book of Hebrew Names

The Apologies of Rufinus and Jerome

The Apology of Rufinus, Book 2

The Book of Hebrew Names

Again, in the preface to his book on the meaning of Hebrew names, he says, some way into it: “So that the building, once it was finished, should not lack its last touch, so to speak, I have explained the words and names of the New Testament. In part I did this because I wished to follow in the steps of Origen, whom everyone but the ignorant acknowledges to have been the greatest teacher of the churches after the apostles. Among the other famous monuments of his genius is the labor he spent on this very subject, wishing to complete as a Christian what Philo as a Jew had left undone.”
