From Earth to Flesh, from Flesh to Spirit

The Apologies of Rufinus and Jerome

Commentary on the Apostles' Creed

From Earth to Flesh, from Flesh to Spirit

Nor should this promise seem to you contrary to the natural make-up of the body. For we believe, as it is written, that God took clay from the earth and made man, and that our body began in this way: by the will of God, earth was changed into flesh. If so, why does it seem absurd to you, or against reason, if, on the same principle by which earth is said to have been raised to a natural body, a natural body should in turn be believed to be raised to a spiritual body? These things, and many like them, you will find in the divine Scriptures about the resurrection of the righteous.

To sinners also, as we said above, a condition of incorruption and immortality will be given at the resurrection, so that, just as God assigns this state to the righteous so that their glory may last forever, he may assign the same to sinners so that their confusion and punishment may be prolonged. For the prophet’s words, which we referred to above, also say this clearly: “Many will rise from the dust of the earth, some to eternal life, and others to confusion and eternal shame.”
