His Death and Burial Foretold

Next it is written that “he gave up his spirit.” This too had been foretold by the prophet, who says, speaking to the Father in the person of the Son, “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” He is also said to have been buried, and a great stone laid at the door of the tomb. Hear what the word of prophecy foretold about this too, through Jeremiah: “They have cut off my life in the pit, and have laid a stone on me.” These words of the prophet point most plainly to his burial. Here are still others: “The righteous man has been taken away from the sight of wickedness, and his place is in peace.” And in another place, “I will give the wicked for his burial.” And once more, “He lay down and slept like a lion, and like a lion’s cub; who will rouse him up?” [a]
