Show Me Where He Contradicts It

The Apologies of Rufinus and Jerome

Jerome's Apology Against Rufinus, Book 2

Show Me Where He Contradicts It

Do not tell me that “you have found the same things treated by the same author in other places in a catholic sense,” and so send me to search through the six thousand books of Origen which you charge the most reverend bishop Epiphanius with having read. Name the passages exactly. Nor will that be enough: you must produce the sentences word for word. Origen is no fool, as I know well; he cannot contradict himself. So the net result of this whole reckoning is this: what you cut out was not the work of the heretics but of Origen himself; you translated the bad things he had written because you considered them good; and both the good and the bad things in the book are to be set to your account, since you approved his writings in your Preface.
