Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Lucius Annaeus Seneca of Córdoba, a disciple of the Stoic Sotion and uncle of Lucan the poet, was a man of great self-restraint in his life. I would not place him in the list of saints if I were not prompted to it by those letters of Paul to Seneca and of Seneca to Paul which many people read. In them, written when he was Nero’s tutor and the most powerful man of that time, he says that he would like to hold such a place among his own countrymen as Paul held among the Christians. He was put to death by Nero two years before Peter and Paul were crowned with martyrdom.
