The Council of Chalcedon (451)
The Seventh Session: Antioch and Jerusalem Divide the Provinces
The most magnificent and glorious judges said: “… The arrangement reached through the agreement of the most holy Maximus, bishop of the city of Antioch, and the most holy Juvenal, bishop of Jerusalem, as the written statement of each of them declares, shall remain firm forever, by our decree and the sentence of the holy synod. That is to say: the most holy bishop Maximus, or rather the most holy church of Antioch, shall have under its own jurisdiction the two Phoenicias and Arabia; and the most holy Juvenal, bishop of Jerusalem, or rather the most holy church under him, shall have under its own authority the three Palestines. All imperial decrees and letters and penalties are done away with, as our most sacred and pious prince has commanded.”
