The Council of Chalcedon (451)
The Bishops Receive the Tome
After this letter had been read, the most reverend bishops cried out: “This is the faith of the fathers! This is the faith of the apostles! So we all believe; so the orthodox believe! Anathema to anyone who does not believe this! Peter has spoken this through Leo! So the apostles taught! Leo taught with piety and truth; so Cyril taught! Eternal be the memory of Cyril! Leo and Cyril taught the same thing; anathema to anyone who does not believe this! This is the true faith! Those of us who are orthodox believe this! This is the faith of the fathers! Why was this not read at Ephesus? This is what Dioscorus hid away!”
The bishops of Illyricum asked for some explanations, and the answers were found satisfactory. Even so, a delay of a few days was asked for, and some bishops petitioned for a general pardon for all who had been kept out. This proposal caused great confusion, and in the middle of it the judges dissolved the session.
