The Council of Ephesus (431)
The Council’s Sentence Against Nestorius
Since, besides everything else, the impious Nestorius has not obeyed our summons, and did not receive the holy bishops whom we sent to him, we were compelled to examine his ungodly teachings. We found that he had held and published impious teachings in his letters and treatises, and also in sermons he preached in this city, which have been testified to. Compelled to it by the canons and by the letter of our most holy father and fellow servant Celestine, the bishop of Rome, we have come, with many tears, to this sorrowful sentence against him: our Lord Jesus Christ, whom he has blasphemed, decrees through this holy synod that Nestorius is shut out from the dignity of a bishop and from all communion with the priesthood.
