Apostolic and Patristic Canons Approved at Trullo
The Circular Letter of Gennadius
Gennadius, and the most holy synod assembled in the royal city, which is New Rome, send greeting to their fellow minister, most beloved of God. As our Lord ordained his apostles without money and without price, so should we ordain the clergy; for the Lord has placed us in their rank and in their place. Nor should we use any clever arguments to escape this plain duty, which is laid on us in so many words, not only by the words of the Gospel but also by a canon of the great ecumenical synod of Chalcedon.
