Laodicea: Preface and Canon 1

The holy synod that assembled at Laodicea in Phrygia Pacatiana, from various regions of Asia, set out the church’s rulings attached below. [a]

Canon 1. According to the church’s canon, it is right that communion be granted, as a concession, to those who have freely and lawfully entered into a second marriage, without having first made a secret marriage. This is to be done after a short time, which they are to spend in prayer and fasting. [c]
