Land, Houses and Gardens Returned, but Not Their Profits

“And so that there may be nothing unclear in this decree of ours, but everyone may readily understand what it requires, let all people know by this that if they are now keeping possession of a piece of land, or a house, or a garden, or anything else that belonged to the persons mentioned above, it will be good and to their advantage to acknowledge the fact and make restitution as quickly as possible. On the other hand, even if it should appear that some individuals have reaped large profits from this unjust possession, we do not consider that justice requires these profits to be repaid. They must, however, declare plainly how much benefit they have gained in this way and from what sources, and ask our pardon for this offense. In this way their past greed may in some measure be atoned for, and the Supreme God may accept this compensation as a sign of contrition and be graciously pleased to pardon the sin.
