God Chose Constantine as His Instrument

The Life of Constantine

Book 2

God Chose Constantine as His Instrument

“And now, with such a mass of wickedness weighing on the human race, and the state in danger of being utterly destroyed as if by some deadly plague, and so in need of powerful and effective help, what relief, what remedy did the Divinity devise for these evils? By the Divinity is meant the one who alone is truly God, who holds almighty and eternal power. And surely it cannot be thought arrogance in one who has received benefits from God to acknowledge them in the highest terms of praise. I myself, then, was the instrument whose services he chose and judged fit to carry out his will. So, beginning from the distant British sea, and from the regions where by the law of nature the sun sinks below the horizon, I banished and utterly removed, with the help of divine power, every form of evil that held sway. I did this in the hope that the human race, enlightened through me, might be called back to a proper keeping of the holy laws of God, and that at the same time our most blessed faith might prosper under the guidance of his almighty hand.
