More on His Prayers in the Tabernacle
These things, and a thousand others like them, the emperor did as a matter of habit. On this occasion too, as was his custom before battle, he withdrew to the privacy of his tabernacle and spent his time there in prayer to God. All the while he strictly kept away from anything like ease or luxury, and disciplined himself by fasting and by mortifying his body. He begged for God’s favor with supplication and prayer, so that he might have God’s agreement and help, and be ready to carry out whatever God might be pleased to put into his mind. In short, he kept a watchful care over all alike, and pleaded with God as much for the safety of his enemies as for that of his own subjects.
