Book 1
A Reign of Over Thirty Years, a Life of Over Sixty
As for the length of his reign, God honored him with three full periods of ten years and something more, and extended the whole span of his mortal life to twice that number of years. And since he was pleased to make him a representative of his own sovereign power, he showed him to the world as the conqueror of the whole race of tyrants, and the destroyer of those God-defying giants of the earth who madly raised their impious arms against him, the supreme King of all. They appeared for an instant, so to speak, and then vanished. But the one and only true God enabled his servant, clothed in heavenly armor, to stand alone against many foes, and through him rid humankind of the multitude of the ungodly. Then he made him a teacher of his worship to all nations, to testify with a loud voice in the hearing of all that he acknowledged the true God and turned with loathing from the error of those who are no gods.
