Book 1
The Death of Maximin, and Plots Revealed by God
While he was occupied in this way, the second of those who had given up the throne was caught in a treasonous conspiracy and died a most shameful death. He was the first whose portraits, statues, and every such mark of honor and distinction were destroyed everywhere because of his crimes and his godlessness. After him, others of the same family were also caught in the act of forming secret plots against the emperor, for God revealed all their intentions to his servant in a miraculous way, through visions. For God often granted him appearances of himself, the divine presence appearing to him in a most marvelous way, and gave him many kinds of signs of things to come. Indeed, words cannot express the indescribable wonders of divine grace that God was pleased to grant his servant. Surrounded by these, he spent the rest of his life in safety. He rejoiced in the love of his subjects, and he rejoiced too because he saw everyone under his rule living contented lives. But above all he delighted in the flourishing condition of the churches of God.
