Book 1
Victories over the Barbarians
So the emperor honored God, the Ruler of all things, in all his actions, and he kept unwearied watch over his churches. And God repaid him by bringing all the barbarian nations under his feet, so that everywhere he was able to raise trophies of victory over his enemies. God proclaimed him conqueror to all humankind and made him a terror to his enemies. That was not, indeed, his natural character, for he was rather the meekest, gentlest, and kindest of men.
